When I asked friends for their thoughts on bread pudding, I was surprised by the exuberant of that particular comfort food. Some enjoy bread pudding with chilled milk or cream, maple syrup or a sweetened sauce.
What do you think of a Bourbon Butter Sauce? My girlfriend Dawn took a cooking class at The New Orleans School of Cooking. She made bread pudding but the sauce is what left a lasting impression on her. She feels you can’t enjoy the dessert without this warm and creamy sauce and my mother agrees.
In today’s Berks Country column, Live, Love, Bake with Phoebe, I shared my mother’s recipe for Bountiful Bread Pudding. On her recent visit we made the dish but served it with Dawn’s sauce and my mom loved it. We hope you do too.

- ½ cup butter
- 1½ cup powdered sugar
- 2 egg yolks
- ½ cup bourbon or whiskey
- Cream butter and sugar over medium heat.
- Remove from heat and whisk in egg yolks. Pour in bourbon gradually and constantly.
- Serve immediately.
