Right? Often times we get so caught up in the dirt we are messing with we don’t notice the tiny hole in the finger tips of our gloves and nails go missing or get muddy.
My vegetable garden has been a bit of a mess the past 3 years. My schedule changed and we always vacation in May, prime planting season. I’m trying to kill the vegetable bed this season by covering it with weed cover to sweat out the weeds. I have plans for the 2014 vegetable garden…thinking more herbs, paths, and maybe raised beds.
I am a bit embarrassed to admit today was the first real chance I had to get in the garden. It just rained – best time to weed – and with a cool breeze and no direct sun I had 2 hours of weeding and potting bliss.
Keeping it simple this year. This is how I planned my garden, potted and bedded.
colors: Red, purple and coral colors playing off each other. Did you know hummingbirds are attracted to red flowers? Potted a flat of red geraniums and gerbera daisies. I did get suckered into more echinacea. I passed on the Mac ‘n Cheese echinacea plant and picked the coral and bright red plants, their whimsical names elude me. Hummingbirds and butterflies like echinacea.
herbs and vegetables: Potted within easy reach of the kitchen: Heirloom tomato plants (matt’s wild cherry and krim) and herbs (a variety of basil and thyme).
vegetables in the flower beds: Dill (yes, an herb), kale, chard, tomatoes, and mustard greens.
annual flowers in the flower beds: Zinnias. Loads and loads of zinnias. Then more zinnias. Butterflies go bonkers for the zinnias. Will toss in some dahlia bulbs
scented geraniums… They get their own category. I love to keep those near the windows, doors or poarch steps. The blooms are beautiful and scents intoxicating. They can be used for baking too.
what do you like to grow?
