On a late summer day we had a special visit to our tiny corner of PA, the Gluten-Free Girl and the Chef. Author and blogger Shauna James Ahern, her husband Daniel and their daughter Lu were hot off a culinary visit to Italy and doing a road trip across the US to get the flavor of local communities for recipe inspiration. The night before was the first stop on their potluck journey before heading to New York City.
I was so excited to host the traveling trio. A friend, Anne, got us connected and made the whole thing happen! Big thanks to Anne. The date was set and calls went out to all local food lovers and gluten-free eaters! Bring your favorite family foods or locally inspired dishes and be sure to bring the story of significance for your dish. Shauna wanted a taste of our local heritage so the theme was a Pennsylvania Dutch Potluck and we did it in style.
Before I forget, the best part of hosting the event was coordinating local farm tours. B&H Organic Produce, a favorite local farm, was the first stop for the gluten-free crew. A visit to Weaver’s Orchard was also squeezed in! Please read all about the farm tour. If you are local and have not frequented either business I’d encourage you to do so. It’s an authentic passion for bring food from farm to table these farmers offer in the marketplace.
Back to the potluck!
We had a delightful spread, thanks to all those who joined the event at the Bowmansville UCC Church. There was everything from sweet and sour cabbage slaw to 2 versions of potato filling. We had some local small food businesses represented. I was tickled Goldilocks Goodies gluten-free bakery, Jolene’s Jar and Katherine Drummond of Creating Through Life visited.
With so much to savor in the southeastern corner of Pennsylvania I hope you also read Shauna’s take on it! What is better than the gathering of strangers, connecting over food and stories and leaving as new friends?
