So it’s a holiday weekend. We happen to be working all weekend but for most people it’s like they get time off. We are staying here in the Lewes/Rehobeth area. It is always a must-do to stop at the wine shops here in DE, for me anyway. I like walking down the aisles looking to learn something new. I can’t be the only person who enjoys doing that. So here are some of my favorites. Yes, I was like a wine tourist, snapping pix of wine. No shame.
Everyone’s palette is different. No one is correct and no one is wrong. Make of this photo a journey what you will.
I’ll start with Dan’s favorites, the sweets. Our favorite sweet wine is Chateau Ste. Michelle . Perfect price point. This is a Washington state Riesling that is award-winning. If you notice, as you scroll down, that this is the only real white wine… well, that’s the case. I’m not fond of whites.
Evolution Wine is a blended table wine. Perfect price point and easy going down….wait, is that how you describe beer or chinese food…easy going down? Whatever. It’s a nice bottle of wine. The White has been their top seller and a blend of 7 varietals. As far as whites go (and I’m not fond) this one I enjoyed, probably because it was a blend. Oregon based growers, yum.
I’m also a sucker for labels, to some extent, and can use any help I can get to with pairings. Evolution has great graphics for food pairing.
Another red & white blend from CA is the Apothic Wine. I first tried, from a wine store employee’s suggestion, in VA. I have had the Red an enjoyed but not tried the white. Easy to drink red, dry enough blended wine. Dark enough for me.
Speaking of white, semi dry & dry, this is my thoughts on them. Or I could have pasted a photo of risotto…white is good in risotto.
This was suggested to me a few years back from a wine store rep in VA, Frank. I loved Frank. I would travel with my wine notebook. Making notes of what I saw that maybe I should try or bottles that were suggested with prices and dates purchased. Frank was so helpful and he never made fun of my notebook.
Bogle Vineyards, in CA, makes great dry reds at a good price. I love the Petit Sryah & Pinot Noir. One I never second guess to pick up if I don’t recognize any others I like.
I like Penfolds. Period. If you like dry reds you might too.
I love Mollydookers better than Penfolds. (thank you S for this addiction). If you like dark rich reds. Mollydooker it, baby. Oh snap!
oooooo…. so excited to find the Snap but Art of the Age. They have great recipes on their website but I may just enjoy on ice… ok back to the wines… i became distracted and went wandering down the aisles.
Another red blend, suggested by the DE wineshop folks, was this lot style by Marietta Cellers. They told me a great story about the winery but I forgot it, tried the wine and loved it. Rich red.
This one is new for me. Picked it up today. Saw it advertised somewhere… there was the image of the bird and a short story about how they grow using biodynamic practices. Oh, and they are organic too. I’m a sucker for a a great pitch …I mean story… just like any other consumer. The story was about how they build bird houses within the vineyards so that the birds have a happy home (please let me die and come back to live in their fields) and eat the bugs that disrupt great grape growing. I love birds, I love the logo and the story. Seemed sincere… so I bought a bottle and hope I like it.
Maybe I should go back for another just in case I LOVE it…. Bonterra
Lastly… there was a liquor tasting. Please no, no liqueur tasting for me. Duh. I tried the coffee tequila and an aged rum. I had to stop there.
